Ella is one of those rare places where you arrive for a night and stay for three. Perched at 1,000 metres in Sri Lanka’s Hill Country, this small mountain town has become one of the island’s most beloved destinations — and for good reason. For families travelling with children, Ella ticks every box: cool mountain air, manageable hikes, iconic train rides, tea factory visits, and a laid-back pace that suits both toddlers and teenagers.

Surrounded by mist-draped hills, emerald tea plantations and a dozen waterfalls within easy reach, Ella rewards those who slow down. Unlike Kandy or Colombo, there is no temple circuit to rush through, no fixed agenda to follow. The town itself is barely a kilometre long, yet the countryside around it could keep you busy for a week.

Ella is also one of the safest places in Sri Lanka for families. The terrain is gentle enough for young children, the local community is exceptionally welcoming, and the infrastructure — guesthouses, restaurants, tuk-tuks — is well adapted to independent travellers.

Getting There

By train — and this is the one you absolutely cannot miss. The train journey from Kandy to Ella, or from Ella to Colombo via Kandy, is consistently ranked among the most scenic rail journeys in Asia. The route climbs through tea estates, crosses Nine Arch Bridge, and winds through cloud forests before descending into Ella station.

Book your tickets in advance through the official Sri Lanka Railways portal especially for observation cars, which sell out weeks ahead during peak season (December to March and July to August). Always book directly to avoid third-party commission fees. Children under 12 travel at half price.

By bus or private car: if the train is fully booked, buses from Kandy take approximately 4 hours. A private vehicle from Badulla (23km away) offers a flexible and scenic alternative.

Getting Around

Ella remains one of the best destinations for things to do in Ella with kids in the Hill Country. Ella town is walkable. For excursions to Ravana Falls, Little Adam’s Peak or the Nine Arch Bridge, tuk-tuks are readily available. A full-day hire covering multiple stops currently costs approximately LKR 5,000–7,000 depending on distance and waiting time — always agree on the rate before departure. Short single-destination runs from the town centre cost LKR 300–600.

Nine Arch Bridge

The Nine Arch Bridge is Ella’s most iconic sight and a must-see for families. Built in 1921 entirely from brick, stone and cement — without a single piece of steel — this colonial engineering marvel sits hidden in a jungle clearing and is best viewed from the footpath above.

The best moment to visit is when a train passes over the bridge — a genuinely magical sight for children. Trains typically cross in the late morning and late afternoon; ask your guesthouse the previous evening for the day’s schedule. The walk from Ella town takes 20–30 minutes along a well-marked path. Carry water and wear good walking shoes — the path becomes muddy after rain. Entry is free.

Ella Rock

The hike to Ella Rock is the most rewarding half-day outing in the area, though it requires commitment — plan for 4 hours return. The trail starts along the railway line, crosses a bridge and climbs steadily through jungle and tea estates. Suitable for children aged 8 and above comfortable with uneven terrain. Start before 7am to avoid heat and afternoon cloud cover. A local guide is strongly recommended (ask your guesthouse — rates approximately LKR 2,000–3,000 for a half day).

Little Adam’s Peak

Ella’s most family-friendly hike — accessible, rewarding and genuinely beautiful. The well-marked path starts at the 98 Acres Resort, climbs gently through tea estates for 1–2 hours, and arrives at a summit with panoramic views across the Ella Gap. Suitable for children from around 5 years old upwards. No guide required.

Visit a Spice Garden

The spice gardens around Ella offer one of the most genuinely engaging experiences for families. A typical visit begins with a glass of hot cardamom tea, followed by a guided walk through cultivated plots of cinnamon, cardamom, clove, nutmeg and pepper — each explained with sensory detail that children instinctively respond to.

Many gardens offer a cooking class: three hours of hands-on instruction in Sri Lankan curry-making, with all ingredients freshly sourced from the garden. A combined garden tour and cooking class costs approximately LKR 2,500–4,000 per person (2025 rates). Children are generally welcome at reduced rates — confirm when booking.

The Nine Arch Bridge Train Watch

Position yourselves on the upper footpath, arrive 15 minutes early, and let the anticipation build. No ticket or booking required — just patience and a camera. One of those simple, free experiences that children remember long after returning home.

Visit a Tea Factory

The Halpewatte and Newburgh tea factories near Ella welcome visitors and offer guided tours explaining the full production process — withering, rolling, oxidation, drying and sorting. Factory tours cost approximately LKR 300–500 per adult; always confirm current rates at the entrance. Morning visits are recommended to coincide with peak production activity.

Practical Information for Families

Best time to visit: January–March and July–September offer the most reliable weather. April–May and October–November see more rainfall, though showers are typically short.

Where to stay: Ella has accommodation for every budget — from basic family-friendly guesthouses (approximately LKR 6,000–12,000/night) to boutique hillside retreats with infinity views (approximately LKR 45,000–90,000+/night). Properties along Passara Road offer some of the most spectacular valley panoramas. Always check current rates directly with the property.

Health: The altitude (around 1,000m) means evenings can drop to 15°C — bring a light layer for children. The sun is deceptively strong at altitude: sunscreen and hats are essential.

Minimum recommended stay: Two nights. Three nights allows you to cover Little Adam’s Peak, the Nine Arch Bridge, a spice garden visit and a tea factory without rushing — which, with children, makes an enormous difference.
